Town of South Bethany – Canal Algae Harvesting, May 1-5, 2023

Date Posted: Monday, April 24th, 2023

The Town of South Bethany, in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control (DNREC) and Solitude Lake Management, will be algae harvesting the canals the week of May 1 through May 5, 2023, approximately between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

For the past year, the Town Council, Canal Water Quality Committee and Town staff, worked together with DNREC and Solitude to find a solution for removal of the algae from the canals.

This year, instead of fully relying on DNREC to clean the canals, the Town contracted with Solitude Lake Management for harvesting operations, while DNREC has agreed to provide a driver and truck to haul and dispose of the algae at one of their off-site locations. The Town public works staff will assist with loading algae from the harvester and onto the truck. This is a combined effort for everyone with one goal in mind, which is to clean the canals of algae in a timely manner.

The DNREC Macroalgae Harvesting Team, under the direction of the Division of Watershed Stewardship, will remain an essential secondary support to the Town.

We wanted to notify Property owners in advance since boats are typically placed back in the water this time of year.
